Pursuant to the Decree No. 5993/QD-BGD&DT/DH dated 29 December 1999, Hue University was mandated by the Ministry of Education and Training to offer the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Environmental Science. On 28 April 2000, the President of Hue University signed the Decree No. 146/QD-DHH-TCNS on establishing the Faculty of Environmental Science belonging to Hue University of Sciences and assigning it the obligation to offer the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Environmental Science. In the academic year 2000-2001, the Department of Environmental Science officially came into operation with the enrolment of regular program students (24th Batch) and in-service program students (9th Batch). After 5 years of establishment, the Department of Environmental Science was upgraded to the Faculty of Environmental Science in accordance with the Decree No. 202/QD-DHH-TCNS dated 28 March 2005 by the President of Hue University. Since the academic year 2006-2007, the Faculty of Environmental Science was assigned to offer the Master’s Degree Program and enrolled the first graduate course.

The mission of the Faculty is to train students at Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Environmental Science and to conduct the fundamental and applied research in the fields of protection of natural resources, biodiversity conservation, environmental management and environmental pollution control.

The objectives of training are to provide the basic knowledge of environmental science, specifically the knowledge of environmental management and environmental engineering so that students, when graduated, can do well their work in the fields of environmental protection, pollution control, environmental impact assessment, etc.

Bachelor’s Degree Program

Admission: Applicants who registered for the national examination in A-group (with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects) and B-group (with Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology subjects).

Program curriculum: 121 credits in 4 years (8 semesters)

In the first six semesters, students together study the general education subjects, basic science subjects and environment-oriented subjects; in the 7th semester, students enroll in 3 separate majors, namely environmental management, environmental ecology and environmental engineering; and in the final semester, students do their graduation thesis (for those who meet the required criteria) or takes coursework to accumulate enough credits.

Enrollment size:

The annual number of undergraduate students enroll in the Faculty is approximately 50 on average.

Master’s Degree Program

Admission: Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, or in close majors such as Biology, Geography, Chemistry, etc. with supplementary course being provided.

Program curriculum: 87 study units in 2 years (4 semesters)

In the first 3 semesters, students study together Philosophy, English, basic and major subjects; in the fourth semester students are expected to do the graduation thesis (20 study units)

A new program curriculum with 55 credits in 2 years will be applied in a near future.

Enrollment size:

The annual number of graduate students enroll in the Faculty is averagely 20.

The Faculty of Environmental Science is organized into 3 Departments as follows:

- Department of Environmental Management - The Head is Mr. Nguyen Bac Giang
- Department of Environmental Engineering - The Head is Dr. Pham Khac Lieu
- Department of Environmental Ecology – The Head is Mr. Nguyen Mong

The faculty’s laboratory (namely General Environment Lab) is used for the activities of experimental practice for students, and the activities of scientific research for lecturers and students.

At present, the Faculty has 17 staff members. The number of teaching staff is 16 including 1 doctorate degree holder, 14 master degree holders (of which 4 are doing their Ph.D in South Korea, America, Japan, Germany and Vietnam National University – Hanoi), and 1 bachelor degree holder who is pursuing her Master’s degree.

Annually, the Faculty invites several visiting lecturers who are professors, associate professors and doctors from other faculties of Hue University of Sciences and other colleges in Hue University; universities and institutes in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city to give the lectures for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs.

The Faculty of Environmental Science has built collaboration relationships with oversea academic partners such as Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (Faculty of Engineering, Kumamoto University, Japan); Department of Urban Engineering (The University of Tokyo, Japan); Graduate School of Global Studies (Kyoto University, Japan); Solid Waste Management Research Center (Okayama University, Japan); Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand); etc. The exchange trips between lecturers of the Faculty and the partners as well as the joint-research projects have been carried out.

Since the foundation, the Faculty has gained some remarkable achievements thanks to not only the own effort but also the leadership and the support from Hue University and Hue University of Sciences and the collaboration of the units and individuals inside and outside the University.
