Joint research on community response to traffic noise between the Faculty of Environmental Science, Hue University of Sciences and Kumomoto University, Japan

In the framework of the Academic Exchange Agreement between Hue University of Sciences (HUSC) and the Faculty of Engineering – Kumamoto University, Japan, from 29th August to 4th September 2012, the delegation of Japanese professors, researchers and students under Professor Takashi Yano’s leadership arrived in Hue to do the first study on the community response to the urban traffic noise. Lecturers and students of the Faculty of Environmental Science coordinated to do the research with the Japanese delegation.

Apart from the participation of professors, researchers and students from Kumamoto University, there was also the participation of those from Hokkai Gakuen University, Sojo University, Ishikawa National College of Technology. For Hue University of Sciences’ part, students of the Faculty of Sociology also participated in this study.

On 1st and 2nd September 2012, under the supervision of the Japanese researchers, 60 students of the Faculties of Environmental Science and Sociology interviewed (by questionnaires) approximately 1200 residents who live along roads and railway in Hue to evaluate the life environment in general and the noise caused by traffic activities in particular; impacts, annoyance and response to noise, etc. This study was assessed the best compared to the similar studies in Vietnam (previously in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city and Danang) because the rate of respondents was over 90% and the responding quality met the demand.

Installation of noise and vibration measurement equipment at research sites on Le Duan road, Hue

On 3rd and 4th September 2012, the research group with the assistance of 24 students of the Faculty of Environmental Science conducted automatically 24-hour monitoring on noise level, vibration and traffic load at 12 selected sites in Hue city. With the support and cooperation of local authorities and residents, the monitoring was completed as expected schedule.

On this occasion, the professors representing the Faculty of Engineering of Kumamoto University met the leaders of Hue University of Sciences to discuss the possibility of cooperation on 2-stage bachelor training program initiated by Kumamoto University. As the proposal, the participating students will study at Hue University of Sciences for 2 years (for undergraduate engineering education and Japanese language); then study in Kumamoto University for 2.5 years (6 months for Japanese language and 2 years for the rest of undergraduate engineering education). Students will be issued the bachelor degree by both universities and will be able to pursue higher education in Japan after graduation. After the discussion, both sides agreed to continue clarifying some issues such as credit certification, tuition fee and scholarships.

Discussion on the cooperative ability between Hue University of Sciences and Kumamoto University

In the recent years, the relationship between Hue University of Sciences and Kumamoto University has been tightened and effective. Annually there are 2-3 students (specifically from the Faculty of Environmental Science) receiving the short-term scholarship to study in Kumamoto University and some staff exchanges for workshop participation, seminar presentation and lecture delivery. This study contributes to a fruitful relationship between both universities. The next survey on community response to urban traffic noise in Hue city is projected by 2013.
